Indian lotus

An Asian water plant, Nelumbo nucifera, bearing large, fragrant, white or pink flowers, which is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and is the national flower of India and Vietnam; also called sacred lotus.
- Formerly regarded as a water lily, the Indian lotus is now often placed in a separate family, Nelumbonaceae. It is unrelated to the blue lotus that was sacred in Ancient Egypt (Nymphaea caerulea)..
