Any of a group of chiefly tropical calcareous red algae (coralline rhodophytes) of the genus Lithothamnion and related genera (order Corallinales), which play a part in the consolidation of coral reefs.

Origin

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in The Penny Cyclopaedia. From French nullipore from nulli- + pore, so called from having no visible pores, in contrast to the millepore corals with which they were at first erroneously classified. Compare scientific Latin Nullipora.
