In Germany: a monetary unit tied to industrial and agricultural resources rather than to gold, introduced in November 1923 and superseded by the Reichsmark in 1924.
  • The Rentenmark was issued in an attempt to address German post-war hyperinflation. It was not valid internationally, but was accepted internally until 1948 (when the Deutsche Mark was introduced), with the last notes being issued in 1937. The Rentenmark was subdivided into 100 Rentenpfennig..

Origin

1920s; earliest use found in The Times. From German Rentenmark from Renten-, combining form of Rente income deriving from capital, land, etc. + Mark, after the name of the Deutsche Rentenbank, a bank founded in 1923 to stabilize the currency; compare also Rentenpapier bond, Rentenmarkt bond market.
