In sense 1 probably from classical Latin remigrāt-, past participial stem of remigrāre to return to one's old home, move back, to return (to a topic of conversation, way of life, etc.), also in post-classical Latin also to change back, although this is first attested slightly later in the relevant sense; compare classical Latin migrāre and later migrate.
