The action of reconveying a purchase to the previous owner; the returning of the rights over a person or an item of property to the mancipant. In ancient Rome specifically a form of divorce involving the handing over of a wife to another person.

Origin

Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Edward Phillips (b. 1630), writer and biographer. From post-classical Latin remancipation-, remancipatio from classical Latin remancipāt-, past participial stem of remancipāre + -iō.
