A long-nosed armadillo of the genus Dasypus; especially the nine-banded armadillo, D. novemcinctus.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in The Penny Cyclopaedia. From Brazilian Portuguese peba from Tupi peu̯a, shortened from tatu'peu̯a, lit. ‘flat armadillo’ from tatu armadillo + peu̯a flat. Compare also post-classical Latin tatu peba.
