A colourless gas produced by Priestley in experiments with fluorspar, probably mainly silicon tetrafluoride (SiF4) resulting from the reaction of hydrofluoric acid with glass.

Late 18th century; earliest use found in Joseph Priestley (1733–1804), theologian and natural philosopher.
