Of fluorine and boron; chiefly in fluoboric acid noun (originally) boron trifluoride, BF3, a corrosive gas with Lewis acid properties, made by the action of hydrofluoric acid on boron oxides; (now) the acid HBF4, obtained by dissolving boron trifluoride in water.
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in Edinburgh Monthly Magazine. From fluo- + boric (although this is apparently first attested slightly later), after French fluoborique.
