Each of the four fundamental tenets of Buddhism (the four Noble Truths), which summarize the Buddhist philosophy of life.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Thomas Rhys Davids (1843–1922), orientalist. From noble + truth adverb, after Pali ariya-sacca, Sanskrit ārya-satya, lit. ‘truth of the Aryas’ from ārya noble one + satya.
