An explosive colourless crystalline substance, C6H8(ONO2)6, which is obtained by treating mannitol with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids and used in the manufacture of explosive caps and medicinally as a vasodilator; mannitol hexanitrate.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in William A. Miller (1817–1870), chemist. From nitro- + mannite, probably after German Nitromannit.
