Attributive and (occasionally) in the genitive. Designating a class of condensation reactions in which an α-halogenated acid or ester, forming an organometallic intermediate with zinc, reacts with an aldehyde or ketone to form a β-hydroxy ester; (also) designating a product, intermediate, etc., of such a reaction. Chiefly in Reformatsky reaction.
Origin
Early 20th century; earliest use found in Journal of the American Chemical Society. From the name of Sergej Nikolaevič Reformatskij, Russian chemist (also transliterated Reformatski, Reformatskii, Reformatsky), who first described the reaction.
