A process used especially to insert labelled nucleotides into a strand of DNA, in which a DNA polymerase adds new nucleotides to the strand on one side of a nick whilst removing nucleotides from the strand on the other side, thus effectively replacing a sequence of nucleotides and translating the nick some distance along the strand.
