1940s; earliest use found in Capital (Topeka, Kansas). From Pearl Harbor, the name of a U.S. naval base on Oahu, one of the Hawaiian Islands, after Hawaiian Wai Momi, lit. ‘pearl waters’ from wai water + momi pearl.
