Delirium occurring in a patient who is also lethargic or stuporous; specifically that occurring in typhus, typhoid, and other infectious diseases. In later use also: severe acute mania.
Origin
Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Nicholas Culpeper (1616–1654), physician and astrologer. From post-classical Latin typhomania delirium from ancient Greek τυϕωμανία (Hippocrates, Galen) from τῦϕος + -μανία.
