A seed believed to expel foreign bodies when placed in the eye; (also) (in plural) the plant providing such seeds, perhaps vervain or wild clary, Salvia verbenaca, or common gromwell, Lithospermum officinale.
- The property of cleansing or expelling foreign matter from the eye was attributed to the seeds of the plant known as oculus christi (probably wild clary) in the 16th cent..
