Origin
Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Urquhart (1611–1660), author and translator. From Byzantine Greek ἠθοποιητικός expressive of character (apparently only attested in the adverb ἠθοποιητικῶς) from ἦθος character + ποιητικός.
