1940s. From ethno- + Hellenistic Greek ϕαύλισμα disparagement, contempt from ancient Greek ϕαυλίζειν to hold cheap (from ϕαῦλος cheap, of unknown origin (perhaps related to ϕλαῦρος cheap, with dissimilation) + -ίζειν) + -μα.
