Origin
Early 20th century; earliest use found in Arthur Strangways (1859–1948), music critic and editor. From Tamil nākacvaram, variant of nākacuram from nākam cobra, snake + curam sound, apparently ultimately (by folk etymology) from Persian sūrnāy.
