A bar of wood or iron fixed horizontally across a chimney, from which the chain or hook for holding cooking pots is hung.
Origin
Late 17th century; earliest use found in George Sinclair (d.?1696), natural philosopher. Apparently from rantle + tree, perhaps after Norwegian regional randa-tre, randar-tre beam or bolt above a fire from which pots were hung.
