A muscle that connects the mandible and the hyoid bone, and that is joined at a median raphe to its fellow of the opposite side to form a large part of the muscular floor of the mouth.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Erasmus Wilson (1809–1884), dermatologist and philanthropist.
