Any of various snapper fishes of the genus Lutjanus; especially the large, usually pinkish L. analis, of the Caribbean and western Atlantic, distinguished by a black blotch on each side.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in William H. Smyth (1788–1865), naval officer and surveyor.
