Late Middle English; earliest use found in John Trevisa (c1342–?1402), translator. From post-classical Latin emprosthotonos from Hellenistic Greek ἐμπροσθότονος drawn forward and stiffened from ancient Greek ἔμπροσθεν before + τόνος stretching, tension.
