That aspect of the self knowable by experience; the conscious self (frequently contrasted with a higher or transcendental self beyond ordinary knowledge or awareness).

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834), poet, critic, and philosopher. Perhaps after German empirisches Selbst; compare empirical ego.
