Origin
Late Middle English (in an earlier sense). From Anglo-Norman mulieré, muyleré of legitimate birth and Old French moilleré legitimized from Anglo-Norman mulier and Old French moillier woman, wife + -é. Compare post-classical Latin mulieratus legitimate, married, Middle French moillerois legitimate.
