Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Alexander Kinglake (1809–1891), historian and travel writer. From Ottoman Turkish müdir (Turkish müdür) director, administrator and its etymon Arabic mudīr, active participle of adāra to administer, govern, causative of dāra to go round.
