释义 | Pawnee Pict/ˌpɔːniː ˈpɪkt/(also Pawnee Pique) Now historical and rare noun A member of the Wichita North American Indian people, especially of the bands formerly inhabiting the Red River valley of Oklahoma and Texas. OriginEarly 19th century; earliest use found in William Clark (1770–1838). From French Pani pique, Pani piqué from Pani + piqué pricked, tattooed. The origin of the second element is unknown, although an Otoe name with the literal meaning ‘spotted breast’ has been recorded. The more usual name for this band in Chiwere and Dhegiha languages was one meaning ‘black bear Pawnee’. The form Pawnee Pict arises by assimilation to Pict adjective. |
