A weapon consisting of a heavy ball set with spikes, either forming the head of a club, as in a mace, or attached by a chain to a handle, as in a flail.
Origin
Mid 17th century. From German Morgenstern, in this sense after Danish morgenstjerne in similar application, the spikes on the weapon being compared to the rays of the star. In form morgenstiern probably directly after Danish morgenstjerne.
