A dessert consisting of apples baked in a deep dish and topped with a crust which is broken up into the fruit midway through cooking.
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Neal (1793–1876), author and women's rights activist. The origin of the second element is unknown; compare slightly later pandowdy.
