Mid 19th century (in an earlier sense). From post-classical Latin pyrenoides from Hellenistic Greek πυρηνοειδής shaped like a fruit-stone from ancient Greek πυρήν fruit-stone + -οειδής. In use as noun after German Pyrenoid.
