Either of two synthetic dyes which have been used as antiseptics: (more fully blue pyoktanin, pyoktanin blue) gentian violet, and (more fully yellow pyoktanin) auramine.

Late 19th century; earliest use found in The Lancet. From German Pyoctanin from Pyo- + ancient Greek κταν-, stem of κτείνειν to kill, on account of its antiseptic properties + German -in.
