Originally: any of a group of flavonoid compounds found especially in pine bark. In later use: an extract of the bark of the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) containing such flavonoids, used as a dietary supplement for its antioxidant properties.
Origin
1970s. From French pycnogenol from pycno- + -gène + -ol, with allusion to the readiness of these compounds to undergo condensation reactions.
