The right of foresters to claim food, drink, and lodging (or the equivalent value in money) from the inhabitants of a forest for the maintenance of themselves, their attendants, and their animals; provisions claimed in this way, or the custom of providing them. Also: a similar right of other officials to claim food, accommodation, etc., on an official circuit.

Late 15th century. From Anglo-Norman puture, etc., right of foresters (and other local officials) to claim food, drink, and sometimes lodging, provisions claimed in this way from post-classical Latin pultura allowance of food, also (after French) potura, putura, poutura from classical Latin pult-, puls + -ūra.
