The doctrine, propounded in 1588 by Luis de Molina, which linked the efficacy of divine grace with the free cooperation of mankind, free will in turn being safeguarded by divine grace.

Mid 17th century; earliest use found in George Havers (fl. 1665). From French molinisme from the name of Luis de Molina, Spanish Jesuit theologian + -isme. Compare Spanish molinismo.
