A genus of perennial densely tufted grasses typically having long, narrow panicles; (also molinia) a grass of this genus, specifically Molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea, purple moor grass, plentiful over large areas of damp peaty moorland in Eurasia.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From German Molinia (F. von Paula von Schrank Baiersche Flora I. 100) from the name of Juan Ignacio Molina, Chilean naturalist + -ia.
