释义 | Pterocarpus/ˌtɛrəˈkɑːpəs/Botany noun A genus of tropical trees of the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae) noted for their broadly winged circular fruits and including many kinds valued for their hard, often red, wood, such as the padauks (Pterocarpus dalbergioides, P. soyauxii, etc.) and P. indicus, the source of amboyna wood; (also pterocarpus) a tree of this genus.
OriginLate 18th century; earliest use found in Colin Milne (c1743–1815), Church of England clergyman and botanist. From scientific Latin Pterocarpus (Linnaeus Flora zeylanica 196) from ptero- + ancient Greek καρπός fruit, so named on account of the appearance of its fruits. |
