Early 18th century; earliest use found in Phillips's New World of Words. From classical Latin pseudoperipterus (adjective) designating a form of building in which the walls are placed within the intercolumniations of a colonnade (Vitruvius; from ancient Greek ψευδο- + Hellenistic Greek περίπτερος), in quot. 1882 via German Pseudoperipteros.
