Early 18th century; earliest use found in English Company trading to East-Indies. Origin uncertain; perhaps from an unattested Persian compound *ṭarḥ andām, apparently denoting a kind of cloth for the body (i.e. used for clothing), but this poses semantic problems and may be a folk etymology.
