A form of apomixis in which the embryo develops from the female gamete following the stimulus of pollination but without fertilization (but usually requiring fertilization of the polar nuclei to generate the endosperm). 2 Zoology. A form of parthenogenetic reproduction in which mating (especially penetration of the ovum by a sperm) is required to stimulate development of the ovum, but in which the male does not contribute genetic material to the offspring.
