Early 17th century; earliest use found in Philemon Holland (1552–1637), translator. From classical Latin pseudisodomon (Pliny), use as noun of neuter (in Greek form) of pseudisodomus (adjective) built of equal blocks, but in courses of unequal size (Vitruvius) from ancient Greek ψευδ- + ἴσος equal + -δόμος, combining form.
