Late 16th century; earliest use found in Richard Percyvall (c1558–1620), administrator and lexicographer. Originally from descend + -ence, after descendent; compare post-classical Latin descendentia slope, declivity, Spanish descendencia, Italian †descendenza (now discendenza).
