Mid 16th century (in the sense 'deceased'): from Latin defunctus 'dead', past participle of defungi 'carry out, finish', from de- (expressing reversal) + fungi 'perform'.

  • ‘Deceased’ was the first recorded sense of this word which comes from Latin defunctus meaning ‘dead’. The meaning, ‘no longer in use or in fashion’, dates from the mid 18th century.
