Mid 16th century (in the sense 'deceased'): from Latin defunctus 'dead', past participle of defungi 'carry out, finish', from de- (expressing reversal) + fungi 'perform'.
‘Deceased’ was the first recorded sense of this word which comes from Latin defunctus meaning ‘dead’. The meaning, ‘no longer in use or in fashion’, dates from the mid 18th century.
