Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Benjamin Smart (d. 1872), elocutionist and grammarian. From micro- + -phyllous, probably after scientific Latin microphyllus, specific epithet (Linnaeus Species Plantarum), itself probably after ancient Greek μικρόϕυλλος with small leaves.
