Origin
Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas Wilson (d. 1581), humanist and administrator. From post-classical Latin Datisi, formed as a mnemonic from D- (in Darii) + A, the symbol for the universal affirmative proposition + -t-, arbitrary element, apparently for euphony + I, the symbol for the particular affirmative proposition + s- + I.
