(In transformational grammar) a rule for relating the semantic structure associated with a lexical item to the syntactic structure or structures in which it is used; (sometimes more specifically) a rule for obtaining the semantic value of a whole sentence by combining the semantic values of its parts in accordance with its grammatical structure.
