Late 19th century; earliest use found in Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. From Italian mezzadro a farmer who holds land on the mezzadria system, probably either from post-classical Latin mediarius sharecropper, or from classical Latin mediātor. Compare earlier mezzadria.
