Pain in the anus or rectum; (in later use) specifically (more fully proctalgia fugax) a condition characterized by episodes of sudden severe pain in the anorectal region, usually attributed to spasm of the anorectal musculature.

Late 18th century; earliest use found in David MacBride (1726–1778), chemist and physician. From post-classical Latin proctalgia from procto- + -algia.
