A genus of Australian birds comprising the lyrebirds, which constitutes the family Menuridae; (also menura) a bird of this genus, especially Menura novaehollandiae; a lyrebird.
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London. From scientific Latin Menura, genus name from ancient Greek μήνη + οὐρά tail, with reference to the characteristic markings on the birds' tail-feathers, described by Davies as ‘crescent-shaped spots’.
