Belonging to the family Menispermaceae (the moonseed family), which comprises chiefly tropical dioecious lianas and climbing shrubs, many containing toxic alkaloids (e.g. Chondodendron tomentosum, the source of curare, and Anamirta cocculus, the source of cocculus indicus).

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in The Penny Cyclopaedia. From scientific Latin Menispermaceae (A. P. de Candolle Prodromus systematis naturalis regni vegetabilis I. 95; from scientific Latin Menispermum + -aceae: see -aceous) + -ous.
