presanctified

/ˌpriːˈsaŋ(k)tɪfʌɪd/
Christian Church
adjective
Designating or relating to Eucharistic elements (especially the bread) consecrated at a previous mass. Also generally : sanctified or made holy beforehand.

Origin

Early 17th century; earliest use found in Francis White (d. 1638), bishop of Ely. From pre- + sanctified, after post-classical Latin praesanctificatus. Compare French présanctifié, adjective. With use as noun compare post-classical Latin praesanctificata presanctified eucharistic elements. With Mass of the Presanctified compare post-classical Latin missa praesanctificatorum. With Liturgy of the Presanctified compare Byzantine Greek λειτουργία τῶν προηγιασμένων.
