Mid 16th century: from Latin surdus 'deaf, mute'; as a mathematical term, translating Greek (Euclid) alogos 'irrational, speechless', apparently via Arabic jiḏr aṣamm, literally 'deaf root'. sense 2 of the adjective dates from the mid 18th century.
